Point-In-Time Count
our mission
The mission of the North Alabama Coalition for the Homeless is to reduce and prevent homelessness in the Greater Huntsville Area through education and assistance provided to the at-risk population.
The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that Continuums of Care conduct an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing, and safe havens on a single night. Continuums of Care also must conduct a count of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness every other year. Each count is planned, coordinated, and carried out locally.
The PIT count should be considered an estimate of the homeless population since only those individuals who are located and surveyed are included.
Those who are not present in a shelter or a known camp at the time of the count may not be included.
